Many Houston-area homes built with factory-built (prefabricated) fireplaces have a framed chimney chase clad in siding, topped with a flat metal panel called a chase cover. The flue pipe passes through a collar in that panel, with a cap on top.

Builder-grade chase covers are often thin galvanized steel. In our climate they rust, sag and hold water, and that water finds its way into the chase framing and down to the fireplace.

What replacement involves

  • Measuring the chase top precisely — covers are made to size.
  • Choosing material and gauge, often stainless or heavier galvanized steel.
  • Specifying cross-breaks or a sloped design to shed water.
  • Removing the old cover and checking the top of the chase framing.
  • Installing and sealing the new cover and storm collar, and refitting the cap.

What this does not cover

Rot in the chase framing, damaged siding, or a failed flue pipe below the cover are separate problems. If removing the old cover reveals them, we will stop, show you, and quote that work separately rather than expanding the job without asking.

Signs you may need this

  • Rust stains running down the siding from the top of the chase.
  • A sagging cover that holds standing water.
  • Water stains on the ceiling or wall near the fireplace.
  • Rust inside the firebox of a factory-built fireplace.

Replace now, or coat the old cover?

Light surface rust on a flat, sound cover can sometimes be cleaned and coated as a short-term measure. A cover that is pitted, sagging or holding water should be replaced — coatings do not fix the shape problem that causes pooling.

How it works

Three steps, and you approve each one

  1. 1

Tell us what you are seeing

Call or send the form with your ZIP code and address, and describe the symptom — a stain, a smell, debris, a fireplace that will not light.

  2. 2

    Arrange the right assessment

We agree what kind of visit makes sense: a cleaning, an inspection, or a look at a specific problem.

  3. 3

    Review findings before any work

You get the findings, the proposed scope and a quote. Nothing beyond the agreed visit starts without your go-ahead.

Questions about this service

How do I know if I have a chase cover?

If your chimney is boxed in with siding rather than built of brick or stone, it almost certainly has a metal chase cover on top.

Can you use a standard size?

Chase tops vary, so covers are normally made to measured dimensions for a proper fit and overhang.

Is a chase cover the same as a chimney cap?

No. The cap covers the flue opening; the chase cover seals the whole top of the chase. We cover caps on a separate page.
