Most masonry chimneys are lined with clay tiles. Others use a metal liner, often installed later when an insert or stove was added. The liner contains heat and combustion by-products and directs them out of the house.

Liners crack from age, settling, chimney fires or moisture. A liner can also be the wrong size or type for the appliance connected to it. Either situation needs attention before the fireplace is used normally.

What liner work covers

  • Assessing liner condition — usually with a camera along the full flue.
  • Measuring the flue and identifying the appliance and fuel.
  • Evaluating whether targeted repair or full relining is appropriate.
  • Specifying a liner compatible with the appliance and fuel.
  • Installing the liner with appropriate connections, top plate and cap.

What this does not cover

Liner condition usually cannot be judged from the firebox alone. A camera inspection is often needed before a relining quote is final. Changes to the appliance itself are a separate decision.

Signs you may need this

  • Pieces of clay tile in the firebox or on the smoke shelf.
  • An inspection that noted cracked or missing liner sections.
  • Adding or changing an insert, stove or gas appliance.
  • A chimney fire, even a small one.

Repair the existing liner or reline?

Isolated damage in an otherwise sound clay liner can sometimes be repaired. Widespread cracking, offset tiles, or an appliance that needs a different flue size usually point to relining with a properly sized liner.

About cost

Liner cost depends on flue height and size, liner type and the appliance served. See the chimney liner replacement cost guide. Read the cost guide

How it works

Three steps, and you approve each one

  1. 1

Tell us what you are seeing

Call or send the form with your ZIP code and address, and describe the symptom — a stain, a smell, debris, a fireplace that will not light.

  2. 2

    Arrange the right assessment

We agree what kind of visit makes sense: a cleaning, an inspection, or a look at a specific problem.

  3. 3

    Review findings before any work

You get the findings, the proposed scope and a quote. Nothing beyond the agreed visit starts without your go-ahead.

Questions about this service

Do I need a liner?

That depends on the chimney and the appliance. An assessment, often including a camera inspection, is the reliable way to answer.

Can any liner be used with any appliance?

No. Liners must suit the fuel and the appliance’s flue requirements.

Is liner repair the same as relining?

Repair targets specific damage in the existing liner. Relining installs a new liner through the flue.
