A wood-burning fireplace leaves behind more than ash in the grate. Every fire sends soot and condensed combustion by-products up the flue, and some of it sticks. Over time that residue narrows the passage, holds odors — especially in humid Houston summers — and becomes fuel in its own right.

Chimney cleaning removes that residue so the system can draft the way it was designed to. It is routine maintenance, not a repair, and it is the service most homeowners in 77016, 77029 and 77033 start with when they have not used a fireplace in a while or have just moved into a house with one.

Fireplace cleaning is part of the same visit. We do not split the firebox and the flue into separate jobs, because the dirt does not stop at the damper.

What a sweep usually covers

  • Protecting the hearth area and nearby flooring before work starts.
  • Removing ash, soot and loose debris from the firebox.
  • Brushing the smoke shelf, smoke chamber and flue with tools sized to the flue.
  • Collecting debris with containment equipment so it stays out of the room.
  • Checking that the damper opens and closes during the visit.
  • A short verbal summary of anything unusual that was visible while cleaning.

What this does not cover

A sweep is not an inspection. Cleaning can reveal things — cracked flue tiles, heavy glazed buildup, signs of water — but it does not establish that the chimney is safe to use. If something unusual shows up, we will tell you what we saw and recommend the right next step rather than guessing.

Signs you may need this

  • You can see a layer of soot or flakes on the firebox walls or smoke shelf.
  • A smoky or campfire smell in the room, often stronger on humid days.
  • Smoke rolls into the room instead of drawing up.
  • Debris, twigs or nesting material falling onto the grate.
  • You have just moved in and do not know when it was last cleaned.

Cleaning, inspection, or both?

If the chimney has been used regularly and you just want it maintained, a cleaning is usually the right request. If you are buying a house, have had a chimney fire, notice cracks or water, or are changing appliances, ask about an inspection — cleaning alone will not answer those questions.

When glazed, tar-like buildup is present, ordinary brushing may not remove it fully. That is a separate conversation about assessment and options, covered in our creosote guide.

About cost

Price depends mainly on access, roof height and pitch, flue size and how much buildup is present. Our chimney sweep cost guide explains what a fair quote should include. Read the cost guide

How it works

Three steps, and you approve each one

  1. 1

Tell us what you are seeing

Call or send the form with your ZIP code and address, and describe the symptom — a stain, a smell, debris, a fireplace that will not light.

  2. 2

    Arrange the right assessment

We agree what kind of visit makes sense: a cleaning, an inspection, or a look at a specific problem.

  3. 3

    Review findings before any work

You get the findings, the proposed scope and a quote. Nothing beyond the agreed visit starts without your go-ahead.

Questions about this service

Is fireplace cleaning the same as chimney cleaning?

We treat them as one job. The firebox, smoke chamber and flue are cleaned in the same visit, because buildup in one usually means buildup in the others.

Will cleaning tell me if my chimney is safe?

No. Cleaning removes deposits. Whether the chimney is safe to use is a question for an inspection, which looks at condition rather than just removing soot.

How messy is a chimney sweep?

The work area is covered and debris is collected with containment equipment. Some dust is possible, so move delicate items away from the hearth beforehand.

Do you clean gas fireplaces?

Gas fireplace service is a diagnostic visit rather than a sweep. If your gas fireplace is not working properly, see our gas fireplace repair page.
