The mortar between bricks erodes with weather. Once joints are recessed, cracked or hollow, water gets in behind the face of the masonry, and the deterioration speeds up.

Tuckpointing — also called repointing — means grinding or raking out failed mortar to a consistent depth and packing in new mortar that matches the original in strength and color as closely as practical.

What masonry repair can include

  • Identifying joints that are cracked, recessed, crumbling or hollow.
  • Removing failed mortar to a sound depth.
  • Repointing with a mortar suited to the existing brick.
  • Replacing individual spalled or broken bricks where needed.
  • Checking the crown and flashing, which often fail alongside the masonry.

What this does not cover

Repointing is for chimneys that are structurally sound. A leaning chimney, large displaced sections or extensive brick failure may need partial or full rebuilding, which is assessed and quoted as a separate scope.

Signs you may need this

  • Mortar sand on the roof, in gutters or on the hearth.
  • Joints you can scratch out with a key, or visible gaps.
  • Bricks with flaking or broken faces (spalling).
  • White salt deposits or damp patches on the brick.

Repoint, replace brick, or rebuild?

Scattered failed joints are repointed. A few damaged bricks can be cut out and replaced. When damage is widespread — especially near the top of the chimney — rebuilding the affected courses can be more durable than patching around them.

About cost

Price depends on how many joints and bricks are affected, chimney height and access. Repair cost factors are covered in our chimney repair and crown cost guides.

Questions about this service

Is tuckpointing the same as repointing?

People use the terms interchangeably for chimney work: removing failed mortar and replacing it with new.

Will the new mortar match?

We aim for a close match in color and texture, but new mortar can look different from weathered mortar at first.

Should I waterproof after repointing?

Often it is worth considering once repairs have cured. Our waterproofing page explains when it helps.
