A chimney cap sits on top of the flue opening with a hood and mesh sides. Its job is simple: shed rain away from the flue, stop leaves and debris dropping in, and keep birds and animals from nesting.

In the Houston area, with heavy downpours and plenty of birds, a missing or damaged cap is one of the most common reasons we see debris and water in a firebox. Installing or replacing one is usually a straightforward job — as long as it is the right cap for the chimney.

What installation involves

  • Measuring the flue (or flues) and the crown or chase top.
  • Choosing between a single-flue cap and a cap that covers the whole top.
  • Selecting material — typically galvanized, stainless steel or copper.
  • Mounting securely to the flue tile, crown or chase without damaging it.
  • Checking that the mesh size suits the appliance and local conditions.

What this does not cover

A cap is not a chase cover. On factory-built chimneys with a metal top panel, that panel is a separate component — see chase cover replacement. A cap also will not stop water coming through cracked crowns, failed flashing or porous brick.

Signs you may need this

  • No cap is present on the flue.
  • The cap is rusted, bent, loose or blown off after a storm.
  • Twigs, leaves or nesting material in the firebox.
  • Water dripping onto the damper or grate during rain.
  • Animal sounds in the chimney.

Repair the cap or replace it?

Most damaged caps are replaced rather than repaired; the parts are inexpensive relative to the labor of getting on the roof. If the existing cap is the right size and sound, re-securing it may be enough.

If animals are currently nesting in the chimney, capping it is not the first step. Read our guide on birds in chimneys before arranging a cap.

About cost

Cap price depends on flue size, number of flues, material and roof access. The chimney cap replacement cost guide breaks this down. Read the cost guide

Questions about this service

What is the difference between a chimney cap and a chase cover?

A cap covers the flue opening. A chase cover is the metal panel that covers the top of a framed chase on factory-built chimneys. Many chases have both.

Which material is best?

Stainless steel is a common choice for durability in humid conditions. Galvanized caps cost less but tend to rust sooner. We will discuss options for your chimney.

Will a cap stop my chimney from leaking?

It stops rain entering through the flue opening. Leaks through the crown, brick or flashing need different repairs.
