A stain on the ceiling beside the fireplace, water on the hearth after a storm, a musty smell in summer: all of these say “leak”, but none says where. Water can enter through the flue opening, the crown, the brick and mortar, or the roof junction — and it can travel before it shows up.
That is why chimney leak repair starts with diagnosis. Houston’s heavy, wind-driven rain makes it common for more than one entry point to contribute.
How we trace a leak
- Talking through when the leak appears — every rain, only wind-driven rain, or constantly.
- Checking the cap and flue opening.
- Checking the crown or chase cover.
- Examining masonry and mortar joints for absorption and gaps.
- Checking flashing and the roof surface around the chimney.
What this does not cover
Some leaks cannot be pinned down on a dry day, and water may travel inside walls. If the source is uncertain, we say so and explain the most likely candidates and how to confirm them, rather than selling every repair at once.
Signs you may need this
- Ceiling or wall stains near the chimney.
- Water or rust in the firebox or on the damper.
- Damp, musty odors from the fireplace.
- Peeling paint or bubbling drywall around the chimney breast.
Why different leak sources need different fixes
Rain through an uncapped flue needs a cap. Water through a cracked crown needs crown repair. Water absorbed by brick or open joints needs masonry repair and possibly waterproofing. Water at the roof line needs flashing work. Treating one when the problem is another leaves the leak in place.

Questions about this service
Is a chimney leak a roof problem?
Sometimes. Flashing sits at the junction. But crowns, caps and masonry also cause leaks that have nothing to do with the roof.
Can waterproofing alone fix it?
Only when water is coming through sound brick. It will not fix cracks, flashing or an open flue.
How fast should I act?
Ongoing leaks damage masonry and interior finishes over time, so it is worth arranging an assessment once you notice one.
