The damper is the movable plate that opens the flue for a fire and closes it afterwards. Traditional throat dampers sit just above the firebox; top-sealing dampers sit at the top of the flue and are operated by a cable.

In Houston, a damper that does not seal is an energy issue for most of the year: cooled air escapes up the chimney and humid air, odors and insects come down it.

What damper service looks at

  • Whether the damper opens fully and closes completely.
  • Handle, cable, hinge and frame condition.
  • Rust, warping or heat damage to the plate and frame.
  • Seal quality when closed.
  • Replacement options suited to the chimney.

What this does not cover

A damper problem can be a symptom. Rust on a throat damper often means water is entering above it, so the cap, crown or liner may need attention too. We will point that out rather than replacing the damper alone and calling it fixed.

Signs you may need this

  • The handle is stuck, loose or missing.
  • Drafts, odors or insects from the fireplace when it is closed.
  • Smoke entering the room even with the damper set open.
  • Visible rust flakes on the smoke shelf or grate.

Repair the throat damper or switch to a top-sealing damper?

Minor binding can sometimes be freed and adjusted. A warped or rusted-through throat damper usually cannot seal properly again. A top-sealing damper is a common replacement, and when closed it also helps keep rain and animals out of the flue.

  3. 3

    Review findings before any work

You get the findings, the proposed scope and a quote. Nothing beyond the agreed visit starts without your go-ahead.

What is a top-sealing damper?

A damper mounted at the top of the flue, opened and closed by a cable from the firebox. It seals tightly when closed.
