Chimney Cap Replacement Cost Factors

Short answer

Chimney cap replacement cost depends on the size and number of flues, the cap style, the material and how hard it is to safely reach the chimney top. The cap is often a smaller part of the price than the labor and access.

Why we do not list a price here

National averages published online vary widely in what they include and when they were collected, and they are not Houston prices. Our own prices depend on the specific chimney. Rather than print a number that may not apply, this guide explains what actually moves the price so you can judge any quote — including ours.

A written quote for your home, after assessment, is the only figure you should rely on.

Dimensions and style

Single-flue caps fit one flue tile. Multi-flue or full-width caps cover the whole crown and must be sized to it. Non-standard sizes may need to be ordered or fabricated.

Material

  • Galvanized steel: lowest material cost, shorter life in humid weather.
  • Stainless steel: higher cost, longer service life.
  • Copper: highest cost, chosen mainly for appearance.

Attachment and access

Caps attach to the flue tile, the crown or the chase. A damaged crown may need repair before a cap can be secured. Steep or tall roofs take more time and safety equipment.

Quote comparison checklist

Use this when comparing written quotes. A lower number that leaves these out is not a lower price.

  • Cap size and style.
  • Material and gauge.
  • How it will be attached.
  • Whether crown or flue condition affects the job.
  • Removal of the old cap.
