Level 2 Chimney Inspection: A Homeowner’s Guide
Short answer
A Level 2 chimney inspection, as defined in NFPA 211, includes everything in a basic Level 1 inspection plus accessible areas such as attics and crawl spaces and a video scan of the flue interior. It is typically recommended at property transfer, after a chimney fire or other damage, or when changing the appliance or fuel.
The three inspection levels
NFPA 211 describes three levels. Each builds on the previous one.
What Level 2 adds
- Inspection of accessible attic, crawl space and basement areas the chimney passes through.
- A video scan of the full interior of the flue.
- Closer examination of clearances to combustible materials where accessible.
- Exterior inspection, including the roof-level parts of the chimney.
When it applies
- Buying or selling a home.
- After a chimney fire, lightning strike, storm or earthquake.
- Changing fuel type, or adding an insert, stove or new appliance.
- When a Level 1 inspection finds something that needs a closer look.
Documentation
Ask what you will receive: photos, video and a written summary are common. Clarify format if you need to share it with a buyer, seller or insurer.
What to discuss with your inspector
- Why you want the inspection.
- Your appliance and fuel.
- Any known history — fires, repairs, leaks.
- Deadlines such as a closing date.
Inspection levels at a glance
| Level | Typical scope |
|---|---|
| Level 1 | Readily accessible parts; for chimneys in continued use with no changes |
| Level 2 | Level 1 plus attics/crawl spaces and video of the flue; for sales, damage or changes |
| Level 3 | May require removing parts of the building to reach concealed areas; when serious hidden problems are suspected |
