Creosote Removal: What Homeowners Should Know

Short answer

Creosote is a residue that condenses inside the flue when wood burns. Light, flaky creosote is removed by normal sweeping. Hard, glazed creosote is much harder to remove and needs assessment before deciding what can be done.

What creosote is

As smoke cools in the flue, tars and vapors condense on the walls. Cooler flues, damp wood and smoldering fires make more of it.

How buildup changes

  • Loose, sooty and flaky — brushes away during sweeping.
  • Crunchy or tar-like — harder to brush, may need more aggressive tools.
  • Glazed and shiny — bonded to the flue surface; ordinary sweeping will not remove it.

The limits of ordinary sweeping

Brushing is effective on loose deposits. It is not designed for glazed creosote. If a sweep finds glazing, the honest answer is to stop, explain, and discuss assessment rather than promise a clean flue.

We do not advertise specialized chemical or rotary glaze removal unless it is confirmed as part of our service.

Reducing creosote

  • Burn dry, seasoned wood.
  • Avoid long smoldering fires.
  • Make sure the damper is fully open when burning.
  • Have the chimney inspected yearly.

FAQ

Do creosote sweeping logs work?

They may loosen some deposits, but they do not replace a sweep or an inspection.

Is creosote dangerous?

It is combustible, which is why buildup should be monitored and removed.
